Film Stills or Beauty Through the Looking Glass

This series began with acrylic paintings that originated with film stills in which mirrors are significant.  Figures are painted out leaving silhouettes and all mirrors are painted silver. Both the painted props and characters become spaces of reflection and projection - very full yet blank spaces. The ongoing series directly references critic and painter Jeremy Gilbert-Rolfe’s piece “Indebted to Penny Florence”, 1987.*

More recent iterations of the series feature pivotal stills from four French New Wave films. Abstraction and figuration come together in these graphic works that attempt to sum up an entire film in one image, or in the case of the video, in one, almost completely abstracted scene.

“Cinema is not the reflection of reality, but the reality of the reflection" - Jean-Luc Godard
