on the artist's work:
Gabrielle Jennings (b. 1966, USA) works in a range of media from video to painting and drawing. Exploring notions of how we read bodies moving in space has led the Los Angeles artist to feature the figure in silhouette. The ways in which movement and pose affect gestural significance are paramount in the work. In this sense her practice references that of Muybridge, however, the work goes beyond an exploration of movement and delves more deeply into the meanings inherent in pose and the blank figure as a poetic site. Jennings' most recent work explores an interest in abstraction - in the grey area between a recognizable shape, and one that is truly non-figurative. Current investigations posit figuration contrasted with near abstraction to reveal how aesthetics manifest as metaphor.
The artist has exhibited nationally as well as internationally and has been honored with awards, artist residencies and articles about her work.
Current Projects Include:
1. Two channel video installation based on part of Marguerite Duras' novella Moderato Cantabile.
2. Paintings on wood panel based on films from the French New Wave (see Film Stills).
3. Appropriated scenes from French New Wave films are nearly abstracted using digital effects.
